cross the country, thousands are without power this morning after Storm Darragh battered Ireland with winds gusting over 80kph.

In Greystones and the rest of the East Coast though, those high winds didn’t appear to wreak quite as much havoc.

With more trees likely to be down here and across Wicklow, Church Lane is the first casualty to come to our attention this morning, whilst there’s also a tree down on Trafalgar Road.

Two tall trees are titling precariously along the main stretch of Church Lane whilst closer to St Patrick’s Church, the road is blocked by one completely felled tree.

On Trafalgar Road, Julie de Bailliencourt woke to see one of the tall trees opposite Marine Terrace [above}, lying conveniently parallel to the flow of traffic.

The bridge at the Delgany end of Priory Road is also blocked – pic below by Ant Harca – whilst Blackberry Lane and the Fairy Trail have a series of climbing obstacles today, given their abundance of OAP trees.

Also, the Newtown to Kilcoole road is blocked this morning, just after Bullford, whilst another tree is down just under the flyover on the road from Newcastle to Newtown, and Herbert Road in Bray is blocked.

There are reports of power outages in these areas too. In Killiskey, they were still without power at 7.45pm.

It’s estimated that at least 70,000 homes and businesses across the country are without power after Storm Darragh made landfall shortly after 9pm on Friday night. Some of the worst hit areas are Cork, Kerry and Sligo.

Kilmacurragh

And at Kilmacurragh Botanical Gardens, they lost many of their ancient trees, with one of the staff there telling us the number was as many as 120. Which means the gardens are closed until December 14th.

Met Éireann are urging caution when it comes to any kind of travel today, with the Orange Warning for wind in place till 10am today and the Yellow Warning until 3pm.

North Beach 10DEC24

A rare Red Warning had been issued for from Saturday 12am to 6am.

And Storm Darragh didn’t limit his mighty wind just to our trees. The Bennet Bank cardinal mark moored approximately 8km east of Howth Head made its way down the coast to our own North Beach, spotted there by Patrick Neary, and still bleeping away as it continued to indicate the direction of safety for those out at sea.
