The Long And Winding Greenway

Walk this way…

t’s been part of town planning for 10 years, and now, finally, it looks like a proposed greenway between Delgany and Greystones might become a reality.

Starting at Barry’s Bridge by the N11 turn-off for Delgany and winding its way almost parallel to the Three Trouts River all the way down to Greystones’ South Beach, there’s little doubt it would be a wonderful addition to the area.

And, encouragingly, Delgany Community Council having put a recent grant where their mouth is, have put out the call for consultants to figure out their end of the proposed greenway.

That both the current Cairn Farrankelly construction of 426 houses and the upcoming 41 social houses in Charlesland have each allowed for the greenway in their plans is heartening too.

In all, the approximately 4km greenway will cut across 20 properties and 2 main roads, with the bulk of the former already on board. And all going well, the Delgany-Greystones greenway will be hooking up with the proposed East Coast Greenway, running down to Wicklow Town.

There are obstacles, of course – such as the planned Greystones Media Campus having no allocation of greenway space – which is why we met up at the Three Trouts Bridge today with one of the long-term champions of the plan, Cllr Derek Mitchell, to find out more…
