aving taken two years out to raise his newborn, the return to a solo career for Greystones musician Niall Woods (aka Nylophone) is off to a rather sweet start.
Given that his comeback single, So Cool, has just hit RTÉ’s Recommends list.
With studio stalwart Rian Trench handling the rhythm section, Woods has made the shift from sunny analogue to punchy synths for his latest earworm. And this new direction seems to be working – even if So Cool is part of a library of old songs.
“In many ways I have moved on from these songs,” says Woods, “but they’re like a tree falling in the woods. If I don’t put them out, did they ever even happen?”
Next up for Nylophone is a shoegaze-inspired album, a wall of guitars sugar-coated with an unashamedly pop melody. Think Cocteau Twins, think My Bloody Valentine, think Bacharach meets Metal Machine Music.
“It’ll be a lot heavier, instrumentation-wise,” finishes Woods, “but the melody will still be the main focus.
“You should always live by the McCartney rule – give the postman something to whistle…”
