When it comes to mechanics, there would seem to be two main breeds.

Those who will charge you an arm and a bumper but get the job done, and those who will charge you pittance and a slice of pizza but turn your motor into a clown car.

Who knows what will fall off when you hit the next speed bump? Oh, and look, when you turn on the windscreen wipers, the car stereo shoots out through the rear window.

Luckily, there are a handful of mechanics on the planet who still subscribe to that old fashioned idea of not ripping off the customer whilst, hey, actually doing the job well. And you’ll find plenty of these rare animals down at Davis Motors, the family-run garage in the heart of Greystones.

Has anyone ever seen these guys not busy? Or not smiling? And that’s all down to the men behind the wheel here, Murt and his brother PJ having starting the business back in 1971, on Eden Road, just alongside the railway tracks. Still going strong, with the younger Davis generation joining the good cause, in the form of Clive and Barry, these big wheels just keep on turning. With perfect tyre pressure, perfectly-rounded ball bearings and all that malarkey, of course.

Murt himself is the perfect example of humble, being clearly a man with nothing to prove. The work speaks for itself – which may explain the great man’s quiet, sunny disposition.

Not even the Flame-Haired Demon Meter Maid could make Murt Davis swear. Well, not when anyone might actually hear him, that is.
