It’s such a rare gift in life to find the one trade that fits you like a double-knitted glove.

For Jason Mac Gabhann, that lifelong calling arrived in the early 1990s, and it’s proven to be the gift that just keeps on giving.

Burrowing away upstairs in The Boat Yard Gallery down by the harbour, Jason is at his custom-made wooden workbench, surrounded by what seems to be a thousand little tools, making yet another precious and unique piece of jewellery.

And the man is plainly happy.

Happy that each new day brings a new design. Happy that each new customer is determined to walk away with a ring, or a necklace, or a brooch, that’s the only one of its kind in the world.

Because that’s where the sparks fly. A totally new challenge, demanding a brand new design.

“I’m pretty much here every single day, seven days a week” says Jason. “So, creating something new here each and every day, that’s incredibly satisfying. It also means, hopefully, that each new piece is pushing me to bigger and better heights.

“All of which makes me one very lucky man…”
