They say variety is the spice of life…
That must be why those clever Flynn twins have decided to include some ugly people amongst all the beauty, fitness and healthy meals in their second cookbook.
Hitting shelves this week – and June 2nd in the UK, where Penguin expect great things – The World Of The Happy Pear is every bit as delicious as you might expect. The photographs by Alistair Richardson (who flew in especially) are lush, the food looks yummy, and the twins themselves look as casually radiant, ravishing and rosé-cheeked as ever. Although our favourite shot, of the lads in their edible underwear, has somehow vanished.
Having battered and breaded the competition in both 2014 and 2015 with their hugely popular debut cookbook, there’s every chance that this second outing will shift even more copies. This time out, the Flynns have delivered a book that is bigger, better, brighter, bolder, stronger and sexier.
Which may explain why they thought it would be a good idea to throw some ugly feckers into the mix, to offer some contrast. Refracted glory and all that, sprinkling their Amazonian world with some everyday people. With everyday problems.
Such as bad hair, mismatched features and a cuddlesome pot belly.
So, in amongst all the usual beautiful people, there’s grumpy ol’ Denis Gray, looking uncharacteristically kempt, as though he’s heading to court, or he’s just been done up by a mortician. Oh, and there’s that Hanley woman, having just been given a major makeover tip by a top stylist – cover as much of that face as you can with some cascading hair. If that wasn’t enough then there’s that bitter, chubby know-it-all, Paul Byrne, everyone’s favourite chirpy illegal immigrant, Raj, and those twins from The Shining, Michael and Joe.
Each bring a welcome troubled darkness to all the shiny, happy posing throughout the rest of the book. Oh, and always good to see names like Auveen Lush and Amory Schwartz in there too. Makes you think you’re reading a Roald Dahl story.
Having proven on their recent Late Late Show appearance that living a life full of healthy exercise, yoga and sexed-up vegetarian food can have the exact same effect on your system as a bucket of cocaine – man, they truly were ‘the Jedward of food’ that night – the Flynn twins are nonetheless their own best advertisement.
Just yesterday, walking along the South Beach, two girls from France approached me, delighted they’d recognised someone in the new Happy Pear book. Each had a copy of the new book, and each book was filled with autographs.
For that alone, we’ve got to thank to the Flynn twins. They’re bringing lots and lots of people to this town.
And quite a few of them are hot foreign chicks.
