Sowing the seeds… SAT24AUG24
ne of the most heartening sights at The Dahlia Show down in St
Patrick’s this year was the amount of young people in attendance.
And where their ridiculous names came from.
Organised by The Delgany & District Horticultural Society, no one’s quite sure how long this annual event – or its summer twin, The Rose Show – has been running, but it’s got to be somewhere in and around the 100 year mark.
And back in 1985, it even had a cutting bloom into its own little society, when The Greystones Flower Club grew from an idea planted by the late, great John Markham, among others.
The winners podium today was dominated by Trevor Stevenson and Niall Coveney, with Christy White, Joan Gregg, John Harford, Noel Cavanagh, Richard Lowe, Carol O’Riordan and E. DeSouza also coming up smelling of award-winning roses.
