Young Greystonians Honoured By Garda

Leaders of tomorrow…

ome of Greystones’ brightest young hopes for the future got a big slap on the back at a special ceremony being held on Saturday January 9th 2016, at the Parkview Hotel in Newtownmountkennedy.

Overall, eighteen winners of the Wicklow Garda Youth Awards received their glass trophies, with the night celebrating nine individual winners and four groups, along with five Special Achievement awards.

Amongst those who received their just reward is Greystonian Nicky Cox, honoured alongside his brothers Ben and Sam for their volunteer work at Bray’s Open Door. Also getting to be incredibly smug for the night are Rudy Montego and Eamhan Lawlor, as well as the team behind The Greystones Summer Project, and Leanne Kennedy.

The winners are nominated by family members, group leaders, teachers and beyond. Garda Emma Skinner – who works as a juvenile liaison officer – explained that the awards are allocated to people who did voluntary or charity work in the community, displayed bravery, or overcome difficulties in their lives. This is the first time this particular awards ceremony has occurred in Wicklow, and the hope is to make it an annual event.

Naturally, the young, youthful and beautiful Greystones Guide should have received one of the Special Achievement awards, given how much we do to keep this community’s heart and soul beating strong, but, as of 4pm the day after the awards ceremony, we hadn’t even received an invite.

So, you know, it’s looking unlikely.

Congrats to all those young Greystonians who did get their much-deserved slap on the back.

And we’ll see if any of them are truly decent, caring, sharing people when we ask them to hand over their trophy to us.
