ith many of the town’s cafés switching to reusable cups, it would appear that the local Every Cup Counts campaign is truly taking hold.

Spearhead by the Greystones Tidy Towns gang, but aided and abetted by many pockets of resistance both here and in neighbouring towns and villages, the war on waste appears to be working.

Said Liz Dillon of the Tidy Towns, “It’s a simple change for people to make, and it’s clearly one that people want to make too. So, it’s all down to awareness, and our cafés and shops having that option.

“Or, to be more precise, having no other option but to buy a cup that doesn’t automatically end up becoming landfill once you’ve drunk your coffee.”

With both The Happy Pear and Café Gray now supplying fully compostable cups, it would appear to be a matter of time before all of Greystones’ many coffee outlets will follow suit.

Couple that with the increased battle from supermarkets against single-use plastic, and sure, we’ll get another 10, maybe 15 years out of this planet yet. Hurrah!
