100 Days 100 Greystonians 2025

The King wore black…

ow that we’re in our seventh year of randomly stopping happy Greystonians out for a walk and getting them to pose in the middle of the streets where we live, we’ve covered quite a chunk of the older denizens of the town.

As each year has passed, what’s noticeable is the simple fact that Greystones has become something of a melting pot.

A boom in population will do that.

People have pointed out that, hey, they don’t know a whole bunch of these people popping up on 100 Days 100 Greystonians, and that’s because about half of the town is relatively new.

We all weren’t lucky enough to grow up on Joe Sweeney chips, teenage discos in Kilian’s Hall or tearaway discos in The Rugby Club, Cabana’s and Lautrex.

There’s a whole new bunch of memories being made out there. Only, you sometimes feel, perhaps not as many. Especially in recent years, the Covid lockdowns knocking quite a few people off their happy feet. Not sure the town’s ever been this quiet.

So, we felt it was fitting to give our coveted no.100 spot to Alan Adamson, the man who would be The King, and who, despite more troubles than most of us could handle, was always looking to tomorrow. To getting back up on the stage, to having another bar of chocolate washed down with Classic Coke (“None of that sugar-free stuff!”), or simply getting back to Greystones. Where he knew people would just go wild at seeing him, even in a wheelchair.

The man loved every single day. Right up to the end.

So, let’s all be a bit more like Elvis, and embrace the rock’n’roll in each and every day that greets us…
