Colin O’Mahony, of Eden Gate, lost his 20 month cancer battle on 30 March 2024.

At his month’s mind mass, held on 14 May 2024, his neighbour and good friend Gerry Sheldrick, suggested a golf event. Gerry was thinking of 2025 but Colin’s widow Julie had other ideas!

June was always Colin’s month, as his birthday was June 11th and it was always followed quickly by Father’s Day. Julie felt that it would be a great idea to celebrate Colin in a different way this June.

In a whirlwind five weeks, everything fell into place. Most importantly, Delgany Golf Club was available on the suggested date. A committee was quickly put into place and started getting everything arranged. It became apparent very quickly that there was huge momentum behind the event and family, friends, neighbours and local businesses all wanted to get involved.

On the day, Thursday 20 June, 20 teams played a shotgun scramble, which was a beautiful sunny day in Delgany. A further 60 friends and family joined the 80 golfers for dinner. Paul Kelly played a blinder as DJ for the night and the younger guests, including Colin’s four daughters, thoroughly enjoyed throwing shapes on the floor.

The event was a resounding success. The Colin O’Mahony Memorial Cup, sponsored by Julie and his daughters, was won by Colin’s good friend Aaron Tracey’s team and was presented by Colin’s mum, Bernie O’Mahony. The trophy has room for a further 49 names so there are plans to run the event for many, many years ahead.

It is based on the Claret Jug from the British Open, which Colin attended on a number of occasions.

To date, over €10,000 has been raised for Greystones Cancer Support Group and the Wicklow Hospice. Both charities provided enormous help and support to Colin and his family and to many other local families.

It’s not too late to contribute; there are collection buckets in Fiona Roche’s chemist and in Centra Eden Gate, and the idonate here is open until June 30th.

Huge thanks to everyone who supported this event, to the helpers (Gerry, Vicky, Brian, Denise, Claire, Gillian and Lorraine) and to the many, many local business who supported us including Just Eat, The Woods Group, Ri-Ra Beer, Centra Eden Gate, Flanagan Kerins, Identity Promotions, Dual Private Client Insurance along with numerous others who sponsored tees and provided raffle prizes.

We are also hugely grateful to Delgany Golf Club for hosting the inaugural golf classic and are already planning the 2025 event.
