The future looks bright…
t’s been a busy week up at St Laurence’s, as they mark Clean Air Week with a whole plethora of planet-pleasing projects.
Under the battle-cry of Beat Air Pollution, the hardy 6th class boys and girls became dedicated eco warriors as they launched surveys, experiments and generally threw their arms around the world.
“It’s been great learning lots of new facts and figures about the planet,” says Anna, clearly excited by the work her class has done. “We were already somewhat aware of the dangers of global warming, but to bring it into the classroom, and see for ourselves what’s going on in the world around us, that really brought it home for all of us.”
Organised by Green-Schools Travel, this is the third annual Clean Air Week, running from November 15th to 19th. And it’s no coincidence that in another part of the planet this week, The European Commission’s third EU Clean Air Forum is also underway, bringing together decision-makers, stakeholders and experts as they once again examine the ever-evolving rules surrounding the very air that we breathe.
As part of St Laurence’s clean air-focussed awareness campaign they took a survey to assess how many cars were idling their engines while waiting at the front gate, and the results were somewhat startling – 81% of stationary cars were running their engines at the front of the school.
Luckily, local TD do-gooder Jennifer Whitmore has put a Bill forward to ban such nonsense.
Also, kids, parents… on yer bikes!
With many of the projects wrapping up tomorrow, we grabbed some time out with three of St Laurence’s air apparents to shoot the breeze…
