There’s something about an impromptu street party, when the sun is shining, and people are beaming.
With the Greystones Baton Twirlers due home from their five-day tournament in France, family and friends thought it would be a nice surprise to greet the eight mighty teenage Pinwheels wizards as they arrived off the coach.
With sweets for the kids, flags for the swelling pride, and a fold-out seat for the heavily-pregnant Yvonne McDonald (who’s looking about 17 months pregnant right now), the anticipation of the conquering twirlers arrival mixed with the fact that, well, it was a damn fine day for just hanging out on the streets of Kindlestown and Kenmare made for a grand evening out altogether.
Finally, a call. They’ve left Bray, and they’re coming over Windgates. Let’s get those flags ready. And let’s get some shots of that beautiful double-rainbow out at sea, nestling just above the forlorn La Touche Hotel, its faded yellow positively glowing in the late evening sun.
When the bus finally arrived, the girls were so taken aback, they nearly headed back to France. Pretty soon though, it was hugs and congratulations all round.
Next year, it’s Croatia. I reckon we should all go next time. Why should the young and the beautiful – and the very, very talented – have all the fun…?
