Wicklow Sinn Féin TD John Brady has welcomed news that a Dangerous Structures Notice has been served by Wicklow County Council on the owners of the former Anvil store on Main Street Bray.

Deputy Brady said “Over the last number of months I have been engaging with Wicklow County Council in relation to the danger that the former Anvil store on the Main Street in Bray poses to local residents and members of the public. I welcome the confirmation that the council has now served a Dangerous Structures Notice on the owners of the property.

“The property, which has been derelict now for a number of years, represents an eye sore and a potential danger to passers-by, with store frontage and signage in a dangerous state of repair, and in danger of falling on pedestrians. Concerns have also been raised by members of the public that the building is being used as a drug den by users in the town.

“There are specific regulations about dangerous structures. The local authority can direct that work, including the demolition of the structure and the clearing of the site, be carried out immediately if it considers it necessary.

“The owner of the property is required by law to make sure your property does not contain any dangerous structures. If it does, they must take steps to remedy the situation. Otherwise, they are liable for prosecution by the council.

“The obvious concern is that the building in its current state represents a danger to both pedestrians who might be passing by and local residents. It is important that the owners take immediate action on foot of being served the notice.

It is also a truth that our Main Street in the town is very much akin to the front door to Bray; it impacts on visitors, on shoppers, and on investors. There is a responsibility to businesses in the town to make the experiencing of and investing in business as attractive as possible.

“So again, I call on the owners to take immediate action or I will be pushing for Wicklow County Council to use its powers under the Local Government (Sanitary Services) Act, 1964 and refer it to the courts.”
