Yep, they’re a shy, retiring bunch, the Greystones U12s Girls Rugby Team, and no mistake.
Special wildcard guests at the Aviva Mini Rugby National Festival, the hope was that these demure, doubting ladies might just be tempted out of their shell.
As you can see by these pics, well, the girls are just too withdrawn and wary for any such public gathering.
Here’s coach Jennifer Scanlan with the lowdown on the big day…
Suffice to say, the girls loved it. They played four games, delivering a few incredible tries, and some very impressive tackles.
Meeting the great Sene Naoupu was a major highlight, this wonderful player a real role model for the girls, and always so very kind with her time. It was a real thrill for everyone, meeting such an idol.
Jack Conan, from Bray, was also there, to cheer the girls on.
If there was a highlight to all the highlights, it was probably running out of the Aviva tunnel to all the cheers from parents, grandparents, siblings, friends and the rest.
A day they’ll never forget…
So, take a bow all 17 players, including Kate O’Boyle, who had to cheer her teammates on after breaking her foot last week. The rest of the team on the day were Millie Devlin Merriman, Michaela Godkin, Holly Sheehy, Kate Colgan, Sophie Hayden, Lily McCann, Ruby Scanlan, Holly Goodwin, Beth Gilbert, Grainne Kinsella, Clara Doyle, Millie Jackson, Annie Fitzsimmons, Lara Sayers, Eva Holland, Lucy Daly and Nancy Quiney, whilst the coaches on the day were the bould Jennie, Stephen Holland and Rory Kunz.
What a day. You can catch our interview with players Annie and Ruby from earlier in the week right about here.
