atest press release from The Whale Theatre Company, issued on
Wednesday, November 26th 2025…
Exciting times are ahead for the theatre with plans to develop a substantial community arts programme to encourage local participation in many art forms.
Having a thriving theatre with regular events has been and can continue to be of great benefit to the town of Greystones by contributing towards footfall for shops and restaurants, making the town more attractive for day
outlined that, as with all arts centres and theatres nationwide, funding and financial support are essential to sustainability. As a not-for-profit company applying for charitable status, with no current public funding, the Board members explained how running and maintaining a busy space like this is a costly undertaking and outlined the overheads the company faces before they even open their doors.
The Whale Theatre Company will rely on on-going financial support from the local authority, the broader community and local businesses to stay afloat. They asked that the Municipal District Council show their support by allocating a portion of their discretionary funds to help keep the Whale open as an entertainment venue and community arts space and, going forward, to consider advocating with Wicklow County Council for the theatre as an essential amenity for the locality.
Indeed this is a call out to our local councillors and representatives, to businesses and to the people of Greystones, Kilcoole, Delgany, Newcastle, Newtown and Killadreenan – Help keep the Whale alive and thriving at the heart of our community!
