No one got hurt, no one was in any real danger. This was a few
ollowing on from our witty and insightful Greystones Aqua Fun Park story
on Monday morning, we got one or two emails from those fighting the good fight when it came to sorting out Greystones’ flooding problem down by the South Beach.
Greystones Municipal District Engineer Ruairí O’Hanlon wasn’t too happy about the ‘humorous sarcasm’ of the article, arguing that ‘for some it is damaging as it paints the town in a poor light which could have an adverse affect for local business.
For others, it is disrespectful as many of the staff of Wicklow County Council are locals who go out to work in conditions and at times of day that most of the rest of the residents of Greystones are warm and dry in their homes’.
Naturally, the article was never meant to insult anyone, but more to look on the bright side of a bad situation. If you got a burst water mains in your home, after the initial shock, well, you’d have to be prepared to laugh about the whole thing.
No one got hurt, no one was in any real danger. This was a few
inches of water. In a car park. And a playground.
Councillor Derek Mitchell was quick to comment, voicing his disapproval of the article. Late in the evening, Councillor Grainne McLoughlin got in touch about ‘that stupid post slagging off the council’, regarding it as ‘just the pits’. Which, again, is disappointing to us.
Humour doesn’t always land correctly with everyone, and it’s a shame when people make something lighthearted into something dark and troubling.

Oh Ffs.
Wicklow County Council are a bumbling embarrassment as far as I’m concerned, and they don’t take a joke too well either
I commend Greystones Guide for highlighting this issue in such a light-hearted manner while getting the point across. I respect that the work involved to clear the flooding is unpleasant and difficult but so is trying to use the facilities affected by it. The manner in which Derek Mitchell and Grainne McLoughlin responded shows a certain level of defensiveness which doesn’t respect their constituents. So instead of criticising the humour of the article, the should try to go with the flow, so to speak, and add their voices on behalf said constituents.
