Carphone Warehouse Leaving Town

ts name reveals just how long Carphone Warehouse has been around, but, for Irish customers, their days are numbered.

Just announced this morning, this 33-year-old company’s 80 stores across Ireland are set to close.

And that includes, of course, their Meridian Point outlet in Greystones.

Staff have already been informed of the decision, which had been rumoured to be coming, and this morning, even the company’s website has shut down.

Explaining the closures, a spokesperson for their parent company Dixons Carphone stated that people’s shopping habits had changed, with a 40% drop in footfall at their stores last year, and that today’s decision was “a necessary step” in the company’s plans for the future.

The decision follows the closure of all stand-alone Carphone Warehouses in the UK last year. In Ireland, the company had 69 standalone stores and 12 within other stores.

This morning’s announcement means there will be 486 redundancies across the country.

Naturally, we wish them all the best in the coming months, but especially the Greystones gang.

Given that they were by far the coolest of the entire Carphone Warehouse family.
