Celebrating Greystones’ Kooks And Grannies

t says a lot about her character that when we asked Letty Gregg on which day this year she’ll be celebrating her 103rd birthday, she declined to reveal even the month.

“I just don’t want any fuss,” she says. “Outside of my family and close friends, the date of my birthday is a State secret…”

Not even Letty’s neighbours know, her son John reveals.

Whatever the date, there’s no denying that this young Greystones whippersnapper is still getting the most out of her days, with daily walks through the Burnaby, breakfasts down the town, and even the occasional quad bike ride at weekends.

All of which makes Letty the perfect final entry to this year’s 100 Days 100 Greystonians gallery, where we deliver a snap a day of everyday people out for a walk.

Inevitably, given that this is the 8th year, and the town has been undergoing a population boom, there are as many new faces as old in the latest rogues gallery. The whole point of this annual snapshot of Greystones being to reflect the town and its people today.

As for the bould Letty, from the first day she arrived here in 1954, she knew Greystones was just the place to bring up a family. Even if it was nigh on impossible to get a fresh loaf of bread in the town back then.

“We’re ridiculously lucky to live in this part of the world,” she says. “And this part of Ireland too. In sharp contrast to the 1950s, today, we have everything you could possibly want right here in town.  And more importantly, we’re surrounded by beauty.

“The kind of beauty that makes life simply worth living…”

When we grow up, we want to be like Letty.
