And all despite MND slowly taking away his trademark voice.
It’s the kind of bravery and determination that the legendary RTÉ presenter built his reputation on, and now his latest bout of sweet stubborness is being recognised by Wicklow County Council.
Proposed by Cllr Paul O’Brien, the Cathaoirleach of the Wicklow Municipal District, local councillor Stephen Stokes has welcomed the move. “Charlie Bird has given a lifetime of service to journalism and broadcasting,” he said this afternoon, “and his campaign Climb With Charlie brought vital funds to Pieta House and the Irish Motor Neuron Disease, whilst bringing a much greater awareness to the latter condition.”
The motion to give Charlie Bird the Freedom Of County Wicklow was adopted by the council today.
We’ll hopefully be hearing from the man himself today or tomorrow to get his reaction…
