ne of Bray’s most famous residents may be about to get a commemorative plaque at their former seafront home…

The new owners of Sinéad O’Connor’s Montebello property filed an application with Wicklow Planning for the tribute to the late singer who spent many years living there.

It’s a move that will no doubt delight her many fans, especially those who mark O’Connor’s passing on July 26th 2023 with an annual Bray gathering.

Lodged on October 15th 2025 by Jane Hughes and David Lynch, the planning application also called for alterations to the Victorian-style home, including the removal of the non-original front porch and the provision of two new bay windows. The duo were also looking to remove the non-original rear conservatory and replace it with a single storey sunroom extension.

The application additionally covers a single-storey side extension, a single-storey rear side extension and the removal of a rear garden room.

Having sold for its guide price of €1.295m in July last year, the previous owner, Rachel Carthy, had applied to convert the house into five apartments, but was refused planning on the grounds that ‘it would be out of character with the streetscape and would intrude on views of the protected structures in the vicinity of the site’.

O’Connor originally bought Montebello back in 2007, selling the Strand Road house in 2021 for €1,040,000, having made her mark upon the property with red, yellow and green paint on the quoin stones on the double-fronted building.  Ever since her passing, there have been calls for a commemorative plaque at the house the singer called home for 14 years.

The local authority have now granted permission for the works, with six conditions, including that ‘the existing dwelling and proposed extension are jointly occupied as a single housing unit and shall not be sold, let or otherwise transferred or conveyed as part of the dwelling’.
