Dramatic Harbour Rescue After Car Takes Dark Turn

hen the Greystones teenager finally got to the woman in a sinking car at the harbour, the rescue had really only just begun.

On Monday afternoon, the lady had taken a sharp – and dark – turn down the slip, and now appeared to be in a state of shock.

And wasn’t, the teenager told the Guide, engaging with her own rescue.

The car had entered the water at speed and was propelled deep into the water when the young Greystones Sailing Club member and others scrambled to reach her.

First there was our trusty teenager – who wishes to remain anonymous – and he first tried smashing the window of the car with his sailing knife but ended up only cutting his hand.

“A group of us from the sailing club then opened the boot of the hatchback and attempted to rescue the lady that way,” says the boy, “but once again, no engagement.”

That’s when they decided it would be easier to bring the entire car out of the water, and after a rope was attached, other passers-by joined in as they pulled the vehicle – and the woman – to safety.

Well done to all those involved in the rescue – and here’s hoping the woman in question is doing a whole lot better…
