She brought it in but the teacher held up the page to the class and ridiculed her, telling her that it was less than useless. Paula was sent to kneel in the corner, facing the wall for the rest of the day and the teacher even sprinkled sugar on the floor so that it would be actually painful.
For my ninth birthday I got a gift from a family friend of a book called A Child’s Treasury of Poetry, which I loved, not just because it was a big hardback book all of my own but because I came to love so many of the story poems and funny poems and even the artwork on those pages. The years of the Covid pandemic were a game changer for many people. Lots of people started reading or re-reading poetry – often online – and they found funny or thought-provoking new verses and new poets. Maybe it was because they had extra time or they needed something to help them through a strange and quite threatening experience. People were dying and they were stuck at home, not allowed to do normal things and having to obey all those rules.

Meanwhile our dad was busy putting Yeats’ poems to music, so it was probably inevitable that poetry seeped in.
have that book and I always tell people to buy books like that for nine-year olds!
That turn to poetry has thankfully stayed that way. Just this week I was talking with Fenella Murphy from The Village Bookshop and she said that poetry books are still selling much more significantly now than five or eight years ago. Not just the big hitters like Heaney, Eavan Boland or Yeats but people are also on the lookout for new poems and writers.
