Over the past few months Kilcoole Lodge Nursing Home residents, kindly supported by their loving families and staff, have raised the amount of €17,323.68 in aid of the local Wicklow Hospice.

The fundraising idea came as part of Bewley’s Coffee Morning Social for Hospice event held last September 2021 and prolonged over the past few months due COVID restrictions. The organized events were held inhouse and virtually as coffee mornings, raffle draws, and art & craft exhibitions of the work of the residents.

On the day of the presentation, much excitement was happening in Kilcoole Lodge as residents got ready to travel to the Hospice and enjoy the surroundings, look at the sea and present the cheque. There, they met Sinéad in person whom they have been in contact with for many months. Sinéad kindly spoke to all the residents and gave the story of the Hospice and the opening and services it provides. The residents and staff met with Hazel, who is the team lead for community nurses who attend to people in their homes or in nursing homes.

Hazel spoke about the great work they do and the specialised and personalised care they provide. Then, the residents were back on the bus to head for lunch in Kilcoole Lodge, singing songs and making jokes all the way home. They gave special thanks to the driver, Liam, who made sure the residents and staff were safe on the bus and had an enjoyable scenic journey.

Eamonn Darcy, a Former Ryder Cup Player who presented the cheque to the Wicklow Hospice, says that “It was an honour and privilege to help raise funds for Kilcoole Lodge Nursing Home. My mother-in-law is a resident in the Lodge, and she receives the best of care on a daily basis. All the staff go above and beyond to ensure the residents are looked after, from a medical point of view to the beautiful rooms, wonderful activities and as for the delicious food, the list is endless.
