hanks that the Great Tree Pruning of December 2024 having already picked off the more vulnerable trees around here, it was perhaps not all that surprising that Storm Éwoyn didn’t claim all that many victims during the night.

As Otto took us on our daily walk by Kindlestown Castle, down Bellevue Hill, up Blackberry Lane and around to Jacob’s Ladder and Delgany Wood, the damage appeared to be just misplaced twigs.

But then we got to The Fairy Trail. And the mother of all fallen trees.

Holy! This is a big one. Luckily for one resident of the neighbouring Struan Hill, not quite big enough to reach their house though, its fingertips just touching their patio.

Met Éireann had issued the Red weather warning – which means there’s a danger to life – covering 2am to 11am today, but Greystones seems to have escaped the worst of it once again. At Mace Head in Galway, winds of 114 miles an hour were recorded at 5am, the highest ever measured in Ireland, whilst 700,000 houses are currently without electricity – another record – 7,000 of those in Wicklow.

Walking around Greystones and Delgany this afternoon, there was little evidence of such a night. Except for that massive tree lying across the Fairy Trail, of course.

There are reports of a tree down on the Kilquade to Kilcoole road, at the latter end and impassable, whilst Windgates is slowly reopening as the fallen tree there is cleared. There’s also a tree down at St Crispin’s.
