Fresh off the bus, McAteer headed straight to Greystones United’s Woodlands grounds, to meet the boys, and give manager Marty a good clip around the ear.

Heading South…

Heading South…
e’s a footballing near-legend, man-about-town and a favourite with the ladies, and so, it’s heartening to see that former Irish international
Jason McAteer got a proper Greystones greeting when he rolled into town recently.
Which was fitting, given that the reason for the visit was the fact that Greystones United are in the doghouse. Having failed to win even one of their first 13 games this year, the recently-relegated football failures were perfect candidates for the McAteer-fronted Training S.O.S. programme.
This new online series may be largely just a shot at viral goal by one of those blackhearted online gambling sites, but, the simple fact that some of football’s biggest names were about to put their arms around a hurting Greystones United and offer them some weathered and wizened advice was nonetheless a welcome surprise.
His presence seemed to work, with the next match for the lads, against Drumcondra, proving to be a very important win. From there, the slow creep back up the table began.
Still, McAteer knew more needed to be done, and soon had the team on a flight to Anfield, to meet up with another former Liverpool luminary, John Barnes. The Greystones rain may have followed the lads over The Irish Sea, but Barnes gave them some sunny advice.
Most notably, to do the exact opposite of whatever McAteer advised.
