or any family, learning that one of your children has been involved in a life-threatening accident is a call you never want to get.

And when this dreaded news happens hundreds of miles away in another country, it goes beyond a nightmare.

Such was the case for the family of Bray girl Hannah Leonard, who was training whilst in Sicily for this year’s Dublin marathon in aid of Purple House when tragedy struck.

Only a few kilometers into her run on October 6th, Hannah was hit by a car – sending the 22-year-old law student, witnesses say, 15 feet across the road before landing on her head.

Hannah has been in a coma ever since, having suffered severe brain injuries, initially undergoing three hours of life-saving neurosurgery.

This involved removing a large part of her skull in order to access the brain and relieve built-up pressure.

With Hannah currently in ICU in a Sicily hospital, her family set up a GoFundMe, to help pay for the subsequent surgeries – including a tracheotomy and the fitting of a catheter to her head to remove excess brain fluid.

And now, four weeks after the accident, Hannah has begun reacting to touch and can make minor movements.

Hannah’s dad Kevin, mum Vanessa, brother Dylan, sister Lily and boyfriend Cathal have all travelled to Sicily to stay by her side during the recovery process.

That fake GoFundMes for Hannah have popped up hasn’t helped a family trying to cope during such a difficult time, and they’ve emphasised that there is only one true fundraising page, with their goal of €150,000 edging ever closer.
