Greystones’ Chequered Future Assured

ith the Stokes clan both competing and teaching, and champs like Charlesland’s Kavin in our midst, Greystones plainly likes its chess.

And now, thanks to a little Community Enhancement Programme funding, we’re now able to play it in the rain.

Yep, two outdoor chess tables have landed in a suitably quiet corner of Burnaby Park. 

Naturally, the Stokes lad is excited agus delighted.

“They are good quality tables,” he said. “Made out of metal, and with moveable seats to make them wheelchair-friendly. And they’re both sheltered in the corner up beside the bowling club, and easily accessible.

“In fairness to Wicklow County Council, they took on board a lot of key suggestions from chess players in County Wicklow, including the Bray-Greystones Chess Club. They deserve credit for their hard work.”

Stephen’s mum – and fellow chess enthusiast – Bernadette added, “The Burnaby Park southwest corner is ideal. It is a quiet area, and it is shielded from a lot of wind. Thankfully the white squares are in the bottom right-hand corners. That’s important for chess boards.”

Eh, sounds like the Stokes duo are actually happy with what the council have done. Or did we miss something here…?

Congrats to Ruairi and the gang down at Greystones Municipal District Council, and to the likes of Stephen and Bernadette for pushing WCC in the right direction. Diagonally, of course.

And the good news is, there are plans to plant another two chess tables at the same spot later this year.

Once Ruairi gets that Community Enhancement Programme cheque, mate.
