After yesterday’s unbridled panic saw every Greystones shop, garage and supermarket stripped of all their worldly goods – with ne’er a briquette or a baguette left in the town by 6pm – the true fight for survival began in earnest today.
Sure, the sun shone in the afternoon, and the sprinkling of snowflakes soon dissolved to water, but there were reports of a car skidding at one of the mini-roundabouts in Delgany Wood.
Although unconfirmed by local rescue services, one shocked eye witness swears the skid “was at least three inches – maybe four!”.
We’ll have more on that braking story when the driver is back from Loughlinstown, where, having been airlifted out of Greystones at approximately 11.30am this morning, they are being treated for shock.
Given our role of reporting the local news through rain, sleet, stupidity or snow, GG bravely ventured out to witness the madness and mayhem currently gripping our streets.
On Chapel Road, just beyond St Laurence’s School For The Religiously Bewildered, one of the workers widening this busy boulevard smiled and waved, but we could see the fear in his eyes. Should these gentle snowflakes continue to fall, it may take this man anything up to 25 minutes to make it home to Bray.
Heading up Blackberry Lane, down the Blind Lane, then on through Killincarrig and back to GG HQ, we were amazed to see young kids being dragged out of school for a bus journey. As we passed, they were laughing and giggling, these naive young innocents clearly delirious from the cold and thoughts of the Siberian nightmare that awaited them. In Bray.
It was in Delgany itself that we took shelter in the welcome environs of Farrelly’s notorious House Of Cute Carcasses, where the wise and profound Padraig gave us some insightful tips on staying warm – and alive – in the inevitable White Apocalypse that is slowly but surely descending upon us all…
In truth, keep those pets – and those kids – indoors; it’s frickin’ freezin’ out there. Literally. You can check out Day Two here.
