The Tánaiste and Wicklow TD, Simon Harris, has today announced the allocation of €90,000 to Wicklow County Council to help remove river blockages that increase the risk of flooding to homes and properties across the county.

The funding is part of a once-off €3 million national fund from the Office of Public Works.

It will allow local authorities to expedite the removal of blockages at locations such as river crossings, bridges and culverts that restrict rivers and pose an immediate flood risk.

The announcement comes alongside revisions to the OPW’s Minor Works Scheme, which will broaden the scope for tackling localised flooding and coastal erosion, including interim measures for communities awaiting major flood relief schemes.

Speaking today Tánaiste Simon Harris TD said: “Flooding has caused real worry and damage for families and businesses across Wicklow. The impact of Storm Chandra is still being felt in many communities.

“This €90,000 for Wicklow County Council is practical, targeted funding that will help clear the river blockages putting homes and businesses at risk.

“As Tanaiste and as a TD for Wicklow I will continue to work to ensure Wicklow gets the investment it needs to protect communities from flooding for the long term.”

The OPW will write to local authorities with the details, with supporting documentation to follow on the OPW website in the coming days.
