J tipped, watering the parched plants and ourselves after another gloriously sunny day, when a WhatsApp from a local luminary reveals that there were gunshots down at the abandoned Charlesland Golf Club this evening.

Gunshots which were apparently the result of a confrontation on the grounds between a dog walker and a very angry man.

Who, apparently, had a firearm.

At least, that’s according to a witness who watched the whole thing unfold from their Charlesland apartment overlooking the long-abandoned golf club.

So, naturally, given that the Gardaí had been called, we thought we’d better do our tireless Guide duty and spin down to see what the actual feck is going on.

Surprisingly, the gate into Charlesland Golf Club was open, and we were soon joined there by a friendly young man who was just starting his five days of security for yet another film shoot, due in town tomorrow.

He had heard the shots, he told us, but knew nothing about them.

So, we got in touch with the Garda Press Office. They knew nothing about the gunshots either.

Or, to be more precise, they replied, ‘As of right now, there is nothing in our system of that description‘.

So, an angry confrontation? A joke? A nutter? An outdoor stage production of Love/Hate…?

Early word from more than one witness suggests it was a couple in a silver car who set up a crow banger – a propane gas device used to scare away birds, etc – and who then began mimicking the actions of a rifle with a stick. A dog walker was soon angrily confronted by the man – the word “scumbags” echoing out across the course – suggesting that it may have been the land owner who was letting the world know he was tired of people trespassing. The Evans family put the abandoned golf clubhouse on the market in February 2025, having failed to get residential rezoning on the course.

Gardaí arrived after the couple had gone, and apparently spoke to the lady who was confronted. None of which the loyal security guard noticed.
