Is There A Scammer In The House?

ith the Minister for Justice Heather Humphreys today stating that the Government will not pay any ransom demands, the criminals who hacked the HSE’s computer system are already, it seems, leaking the data.

Meaning that many people may now be vulnerable to criminals posing as HSE employees.

One such case has come to our attention, sent in by a GG reader who wishes to remain anonymous…

My mom just got a call from a Dublin number pretending to be from the HSE. They had all her contact details, date of birth, PPS number and date of her hospital stay in November. 

They asked for her bank details to give her a refund as she was overcharged, but she hung up and called her GP.

Her GP said that they had gotten many calls about this already and that it’s the hackers releasing the stolen data.

So, beware of any such calls purporting to be from the HSE, especially if they involve giving out any information, such as your bank details.

You heard the man. Never give anyone your bank details until you’ve authenticated who they are. 

And just in case you do get a call like the one above, try and keep an ear-splitting referee whistle by the phone.
