It Was 60 Years Ago Today…

erhaps it was the short, two-day notice, or maybe the Protestants in the town were worried that it might be a trap, but, this afternoon’s 60th birthday surprise for Farrelly’s butchers was a surprisingly small affair.

The boys themselves were in fine fettle, and, it’s got to be said, neither of them look a day over 59.

Must be all that red meat. And their daily dose of bad puns.

Sure, only the other day, a young lady walked into Farrelly’s and asked the brothers for a double entrendre – so, they gave her one.

Boom, agus BOOM!

The beautiful Claire from Bear Paw was the lady with the yummy cake to mark the fact that, yep, it was 60 years ago today that Anthony Farrelly Snr signed on the dotted line, taking over a butchers that was already a staggering 100 years old back on that fateful day, October 6th, 1958.

And it was in October 1992 that his two youngest sons took over the family business. Whether they actually wanted to or not.

There’s little doubt that the old man would be proud of what they’ve done with the place. He may even be a little staggered, given just how much Farrelly’s butchers has grown in the last 10 years. Somehow, they’ve gone from bog standard to boutique without ever lifting a finger.

Sure, that original A. Farrelly sign over the door is still there, clinging on for dear life.

Congrats to Anthony and Padraig – and their siblings, Philip and Helen – on a major milestone, and here’s to many more years clogging up the arteries and intestines of the good, the bad and the Shay Clear…
