South Beach shout-out…

ike anywhere with a shoreline, Greystones is always on the lookout for dolphins.

Not that we don’t appreciate a wave from the odd seal too, of course.

But there’s something almost unicorn-like about dolphins, these incredibly smart and majestic creatures representing the kind of pure joy, grace and freedom that surfers chase every day.

High-flyer Cian Leach captured some stunning aerial footage of bottlenose dolphins swimming off Bray Head back in June (shown above), and a boat trip along our coast got a special escort back in January 2023.

And yet, bizarrely, no one around here has made a podcast about them.

Now, with his feet firmly on the North Beach, local lad Bill Malone managed to film up to 12 of the groovy feckers frolicking just off our coast on Monday.

“They put on quite a show,” says Bill. “They’ve been seen numerous times over the past few weeks, enjoying all the hospitality they can get from Wicklow Town to Howth.

“Amazing to watch…”

Hopefully these divine ducking and diving dolphins will stick around. We could do with a little Fungi tourism boost around here given that The Cliff Walk has been stuck in a lockdown limbo for three years now.

And who knows, given the constant shift in our weather axis, we may even go on to bigger and better things.
