t was the result the boxing world – and just about everyone else around the globe – was expecting.

Last night, at the Matchroom HQ in Essex, Katie Taylor beat Delfine Persoon in a rematch that once gain push ed both fighters to their limits.

In the end, the judges’ scorecards were 98-93, 96-94, 96-94 in the Bray wonder’s favour.

This mean Taylor retains her lightweight world titles, telling Sky Sports after the match, “I knew this was going to be tough, and I had to dig deep at some stage in the fight. But I thought I boxed better than the last time, even though I got drawn in a few times, and that’s what got me the win in the end.”

Having fought the 35-year-old Belgian police woman in June of last year at Madison Square Garden, Taylor knew that the formidable Persoon was gunning for revenge. Especially since some believed that last year’s bout should have ruled in her favour.

“You can’t relax with Delfine. You know she’s going to come and come, and we’ve had two amazing fights.”

After the match, Persoon conceded that Taylor had truly earned the retention of her WBC, IBF, WBO and WBA titles.
