Kind Of A Big Daal

ou know how it is in the restaurant business; Monday you’re getting thanks and praise from one of the world’s most famous chefs, and on Wednesday, you’re picking up awards for being the best takeaway in Ireland.

Ho-hum, just another boring week for the dedicated and delightful denizens of Daata.

“We’re still not quite sure what hit us,” says Rahat when we swung down to their Greystones HQ today. “We were so thrilled to have Gordon Ramsay swing by, and say such nice things about us, and then we won those two major awards two days later. Reckon a lotto ticket for the weekend might be a good idea…”

For Rahat and her husband, Waseem, Daata is very much a family affair, a point reiterated by the fact that their niece, Aliha, is here today too.

“It feels like Daata has been a part of my life forever,” says Aliha, “and even when I wasn’t able to help out, it was always something that the entire family were involved in. It means that we’re all very close, and we all care deeply about how good Daata can be, on every front…”

Which may explain why their bigger, better, stronger, funkier Bray HQ is such a thing of beauty, complete with a rooftop restaurant ever ready to go topless and bask in that beautiful Irish sunshine. Add to that similarly seductive and meticulously manicured new branches in Glasthule and Blackrock, and Daata has been hitting the sweet spot for more and more people around here.

We reckon it’s all down to those prestigious GG awards. And the ridiculously yummy food.

Either way, Daata has come a long way since they first opened their doors back in 2000, as Rahat and Aliha explain…
