With her roles in the likes of Greystones Golf Club and St David’s Secondary School, Kitty Ellis was a part of many a Greystonian’s life.
And now, sadly, the lady born Katherine Costello has passed away, peacefully at Dargle Valley Nursing Home.
Having moved to Greystones all the way from Tipperary in 1973, Kitty spent much of her life working as a teacher, largely in Presentation College Glasthule and later, St David’s, where the lady finally handed in her chalk.
Which meant, of course, lots more time for her favourite sport, golf, her love of the game resulting a stint as Lady Captain at Greystones Golf Club.
Despite personal tragedies – the death of her only son, Paul, in 1989; the passing of her beloved husband, John, in 1998 – Kitty kept on smiling, much of her beam directed at her daughters, Liz and Mary, and the seven grandchildren they gave her. Liz’s three kids live here in Greystones, whilst Mary’s four are based in Richmond, Virginia.
Heck, there’s even a great-granddaughter too, the beautiful Miya, along with many nephews and nieces, thanks to Kitty’s sisters, Maureen and Chris.
“She was a lovely granny,” says Nessa, Liz’s daughter, “and did all the granny things. She loved taking her grandchildren on nature walks, and teaching them how to bake. She was overjoyed to welcome Miya into the world last year.”
The lady will be missed by Greystonians far and wide, but most of all by her loving family and extended family, near and far.
Kitty’s Funeral Mass will be celebrated in private by Fr Gerard Young on Friday, December 4th at 1pm in The Holy Rosary Church before being laid to rest in Redford Cemetery. The service will be streamed live here.
