reystones teenager Ben Hogan has decided to put some of this downtime to some very good use.
By taking a run and jump into that bitterly cold Greystones sea every day, for 12 days.
The good use part – other than Ben getting his mojo jolted – is that his 12 Swims Of Christmas will raise funds for Temple Street Children’s Hospital.
All part of the nationwide 100 Minds, engineering student Ben was inspired by his cousin’s membership of the fundraising group, and so signed up for this year’s €100k In 100 Days challenge. Which would be a nice chunk of Christmas change for Temple Street.
“This really is an amazing cause,” says Ben. “The work done by the fantastic team in Temple Street, and the bravery of the children there is truly inspiring.”
And Maura Winston’s lad is calling on others to join in on the fundraising splash, by simple taking a swim at your local beach, pool or lake (“As long as it’s safe!”), take a selfie for your social media (using hashtag #12swimsofchristmas) followed by a warm, dry and chuckling friend or two donating of a fiver to the Temple Street fundraiser here.
“As we can’t go to the pub for Christmas this year,” smiles young Hogan, “whynot put that pint money to good use…?”
Starting December 5th, you can donate to Ben’s daily swim on the South Beach right about here, and find out more about joining the nationwide splash by emailing benjamin.hogan@ucdconnect.ie.
