Major Moolah For Greystones Projects

Green Party TD for Wicklow Deputy Steven Matthews is delighted that a massive €8.4m has been allocated to 41 sustainable transport projects across County Wicklow, including a number of projects in the Greystones district that he has supported over the past year.

Projects include cycle and pedestrian improvements for Mill Road to Delgany (€350,000), a Pathfinder project for Greystones (€1,500,000), Convent Road One-Way Active Travel Scheme (€40,000), a local transport plan for Greystones (€30,000), Kilcoole Road cycle and pedestrian improvements (€300,000), Kindlestown Road Cycle Scheme (€10,000), Priory Road footpath (€50,000), Killincarrig Village Enhancement Scheme (€240,000) and Safe Route to School funding for several schools including Temple Carrig (€20,000), St Kevin’s National School (€100,000), Gaelscoil na gCloch Liath (€20,000) and Greystones Educate Together (€20,000).

The NTA will oversee the projects announced today by Minister Eamon Ryan, and ensure they are accessible, age friendly and maximise comfort for all ages.

“I’m delighted to see so many of the projects I advocated for, receive funding,” said Deputy Matthews. “Safe pedestrian and cycle routes in towns and villages can transform communities. Providing this infrastructure gives an alternative to car dependent journeys and makes walking or cycling a more attractive option. Residents and community groups that I have met with during the past year will see many of their concerns dealt with by the funding announced today.

“I am constantly meeting with residents across County Wicklow who tell me they would like to walk or cycle but don’t feel safe enough. Often in smaller villages there can be areas where there are inadequate footpaths and in some places none at all.

“Cyclists are forced to take their chances in traffic. Many parents would love to cycle to school with their children but the level of congestion around schools with no dedicated cycle lanes makes them feel unsafe. I have been feeding back to both Wicklow County Council and the Minister, the importance of funding these improvements. It’s reassuring that with the Green Party at the helm, huge investment is being made every year into local road, path and cycle improvements.

“Since the Green Party entered government spending on cycle lanes and footpaths has increased more than six fold. I campaigned on the basis of going into government because I knew it would allow me to deliver locally, and push for vital infrastructure. I’m looking forward to seeing these projects develop during the year.
