ith a landslide on December 30th 2015 leaving the railway line within two metres of the sea, work has begun again this week at The Murrough.

Back in January 2016, Irish Rail carried out protection works on the Wicklow coastline which involved 750 to 800 tonnes of stone from Balleece and Bagenalstown.

The railway line borders a 15km coast wetland extending north from The Murrough.

The latest erosion works are expected to take approximately four weeks to complete, extending the current rock armour northwards to the next lifebuoy.

This will entail a diverted pedestrian trail being in place during the works.

The works are part of Irish Rail’s €230m East Coast Railway Protection Project that will also involve reinforcing erosion works along Bray Head.
