My Greystones: Maximillian ‘Danger’ Byrne

Back in August, 2014, when GG gave their trusty Guide dog Max an early My Greystones slot, we were pretty convinced that we couldn’t love the little fecker more.

Turns out we were wrong. Very wrong.

There isn’t a day goes by when we don’t have a magic moment with our Max.

Whether it’s hunting down rogue rocks at The Cove and giving them a good seeing to, or staring out the window of the Dart, happy watching the world whiz by, or simply telling yet another concerned Greystonian who finds him alone outside a cafe that, “No, no, I’m fine! I’m just waiting outside for Fatboy to get his ass in gear”, there’s never a dull day with Max.

You only have to take a casual look around at other dogs to realise just how special Max is. Especially if those other dogs are my mate Grace’s two possessed pooches. Or my neighbour’s tormented town cryer.

The fact that we’re not entirely sure what breed Max is – springer spaniel, the rescue centre said, although there could be a bit of the Welsh setter (always black) or even, one woman assured us, Portuguese water dog – means the guessing game goes on with strangers pretty much every day.

All we do really know about Greystones’ Greatest Dog Forever & Ever is that his previous owners called him Furby.

Which means we rescued Max in more ways than one.

So, here’s to you, dear boy. Thanks to your daily demand for at least three walks, before breakfast, you’ve made a happy man very old.

And the fact that Max can fill out a questionnaire merely confirms that he’s a definite cut above your average Greystones mutt.
