THE ARTIST by The Artist
I’ve had an interest in photography for as long as I can remember.
Growing up, I mainly took photos at special events or on holidays as memories. It was over the last few years that I have really become more serious about it.
While studying
for my Tourism Marketing Degree I based my thesis research on the image and perception people have of places. I was intrigued with the different stories, meaning and perception an image can portray of a place.
A number of years ago my parents bought me a Canon EOS 1200D which allowed me to explore my abilities and really start my photography journey. I then did some travelling in Europe and America and my passion for landscape and destination photography became apparent.
Although I am quite new to the photography scene I have a selection of pictures which I am delighted to share.
I am incredibly humbled to have been invited to contribute to the A Kick Up The Arts column.
My Work

Greystones Seaside by Lisa Hempenstall
Growing up in a town as naturally beautiful as Greystones is something I am so grateful for. Even on a dull and gloomy day there is something so tranquil about strolling along by the sea watching some sailing boats go by.

Powerscourt Gardens by Lisa Hempenstall
This picture was taken back in November last year. It was along the entrance road into Powerscourt. I loved how the colours of the trees looked against the blue sky.

Edinburgh by Lisa Hempenstall
While visiting Edinburgh Castle in November 2014 I was lucky enough to come across a stunning sunset. I loved the view of the buildings and mountains in the distance and the beautiful winter sky after such a showery, dull day.
My Inspirations

Cambodia by Paddy Whelan
My grandfather Paddy Whelan was a multi-award winning photographer for the Irish Times. He is my biggest influence and inspiration.
He was a photographer who could be put into any conflict and he would always come back with outstanding pictures. The passion and stories he had from his talented career as a photographer are incredible.
He worked on many overseas assignments in France, South Africa, Russia, Asia and Northern Ireland in troubled times.
The above photo was taken by Paddy in Cambodia in 1979 while on an assignment. They tramped through the jungle for over three weeks in search of Pol Pot. They never found the dictator but were actually found themselves by the Khmer Rouge but thankfully were later set free. On return Gay Byrne invited him for an interview on the Late Late Show to share the experience. You can find this picture and some more from his Cambodia assignment here.

Dun Laoghaire Pier by Jennifer Shortt
Another one of my inspirations is Jennifer Shortt who is based in North County Wicklow. Jennifer is currently undertaking a BA Degree in Photography at IADT, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin. She has an incredible selection of Photography and has exhibited her work at the Greystones Art & Photography Exhibition, The Creation Room, Fishers in Newtownmountkennedy and at Killruddery House & Gardens, Co. Wicklow. You can see more of her stunning work on her website here.

Last but not least…
I first came across Ken Kaminesky on Instagram and have been a follower of his work ever since. He has over fifteen years experience in photography where he has shot commercial lifestyle images. In 2016 he co-founded Discovery Photo Tours shooting travel images. He shares his love for travel and photography through many social media outlets with followers from all over the world.
The view from Paizalle Michelangelo in Florence, Italy which Ken captured is simply outstanding. It portrays such a vivid sunset over what is a breathtaking scene. Ken’s website has links to all his social media profiles – you’ll find it here.
You can check out more of Lisa’s work on Instagram right here, and more Kick Up The Arts beauties here.
