Noah’s Arch Gets Its Train Drain

Social Democrats Cllr for Greystones, Delgany, Kilcoole and Newcastle has welcomed Irish Rail’s commitment to put in place a permanent drain under the train archway at Greystones South Beach.

“Last year I approached Irish Rail after flooding continued to appear after rainfall. This was impeding access to the beach for dog walkers, swimmers and families using the area. With the promotion of an outdoor summer, access will be crucial for locals.

“Unfortunately, despite commitments to fix the flooding by removing sand, flooding as only continued and the problem has not gone away.

“I approached Irish Rail with video evidence of significant amount of flooding occurring under the archway after rainfall which I said was unsustainable when it came to access to the South Beach and I asked if a more permanent solution could be put in place.

“Irish Rail confirmed that due to high easterly winds and tides, rain had blocked up the underpass again. I was delighted to get confirmation this week that the Regional Manager of Irish Rail has committed to a permanent drain under the bridge post bird nesting season this September. This should clear flooding issues for good.

“In the meantime, they will be clearing the sand from under the archway to help reduce retention of water,” concludes Cllr Neary.
