ormed in 2023 by Theo Monaghan, Eoin Davy, Marc Kearns and Oisin Dutton, Greystones film collective Mokeda have managed to put together their debut feature just in time for Halloween.

Which is handy, given that it’s an old-school boogeyman horror.

Entitled Murky Grove, this 28-minute feature – all about, hey, an ill-fated weekend trip to a cabin in the woods – stars Jamie Hamilton, Alicia Ivory, Coco Evans and Sam White, and was designed to brown, season and thicken the underpants of even the toughest Bisto kid.

“The inspiration came from ’80s slasher films,” says Theo, “which may explain why it’s not a fully serious affair, with plenty of satire on the horror genre mixed in with the blood and gore. We love horror with its tongue in its cheek. And then to have that tongue ripped out…”

Shot mostly around Greystones, Murky Grove was a long time coming, with an early draft of the script having been written quite a few years before shooting began. And thanks to scheduling conflicts with crew and cast members, the shoot took longer than expected too, hitting the 8-month mark.

That these young filmmakers completed their horror debut in time for Halloween says something about their drive and determination. Mark Borchardt, take note.

“We’ll be releasing the film on YouTube on October 31st, fittingly enough,” says Theo, “and then we’re straight on to planning our next outing. Which will hopefully be a full-length feature, especially given that we have just gotten our hands on some new equipment, including a brand new camera…”

Written and directed by Eoin Davy, with cinematography by Theo Monaghan and Oisin Dutton, Perth musician Liam van der Moezel provided the soundtrack whilst Feailm McConville was the man taking care of costume design and visual effects.

“We’re very proud of this film,” finishes Theo, “and we’re hoping people will actually catch it on Halloween night to have a good laugh – and some squeaky cheek moments…”
