Remembering Mary

here’s something about those teenage school years when it feels as though the world is simply yours for the taking.

You just have to choose which part of it you want to conquer.

And, you know, get some good grades, some street smarts and a truckload of luck if you’re aiming for the Full Elon Musk.

It’s the time in our lives that most people look back on with the most fondness, that sense of optimism and adventure promising so much for the years ahead.

For some, tragically, those years never arrive, as happened with Mary Byrne 50 years ago…

Having just completed her Intermediate Cert in the summer, on July 17th 1972, suddenly, cruelly, Mary passed.

To mark the 50th anniversary, her family – siblings Charlotte, Anne, Catherine, Susan and Thomas – have put together a short poem to honour their sister’s memory…

If roses grow in heaven, Lord,
Please pick a bunch for us

Place them in our sister’s arms
And tell her they’re from us

Tell her that we love and miss her
and when she turns to smile,

Place a kiss upon her cheek
and hold her for a while.

Because remembering her is easy.
We do it everyday,

But there’s an ache within in our hearts
That will never go away
