Independent candidate Shay Cullen convened a meeting of his main election team this week with a view to launching his official campaign drive on Tuesday 29th October in the Parkview Hotel, NewtownMountKennedy.

“We are ready to roll on foot of any Government announcement,” said Cullen, “and the reception I’m getting out on the road at community events this week has been affirming.”

Shay continued, “We have assembled a core group of people from throughout the County and my friend and seasoned political campaigner Chris Fox of Kilmacanogue is stepping up to manage the Cullen canvass team. Also assisting me in the drive to secure a seat is a core group of Independent councillors, community figureheads, my extended family and friends.

“Political communications professional Sinead Dolan, who previously assisted on national campaigns for Independents such as Sean Gallagher and Verona Murphy, spoke to us to advise on election strategy and the realities of the requirements needed to run a successful grassroots campaign. We were all left in no doubt of the sizeable task ahead standing as a non-party candidate in a four-seater constituency but we are buoyed up, able and willing to take our message to voters in towns and villages across Wicklow to secure their support.

“I firmly believe Independents will be at the centre of the negotiations in the formation of any new government and our ignored areas deserve equal representation”.

Shay further stated, “I’m humbled by the people who have come forward to help me secure an Independent seat for Wicklow. Independent representation is part of Wicklow peoples’ psyche and momentum is building as we wait for clarity around the election date itself. The messages online and the calls of support keep coming over the past week and I’m listening; now we need to turn that interest into votes come polling day.”

“I wish to extend an invitation to everyone – from first-time voters to those who have seen it all in life – to please join me and my team for an hour from 7.30pm next Tuesday. “People want a choice outside of the incumbents and a candidate who knows what matters to the people of Wicklow and who can concentrate on those issues and not be distracted by other responsibilities.”

Shay concluded by commenting, “Only this week we saw more transport updates on bus corridors for the N11. I say the suggestion that taking people out of cars into buses won’t make a huge difference as they will all ultimately sit in the same gridlock somewhere along the route to the city. Existing government Ministers and backbench TDs from all sides have failed to deliver the one thing needed; the actual allocation of infrastructure funding to complete the upgrades in full without further delay.

“The Taoiseach’s home county transport problems still aren’t a main priority after a decade in power and plenty of money around.”
