Simon Officially Opens St Patrick’s New Classrooms

Tánaiste Simon Harris TD today officially opened six new classrooms at St. Patrick’s National School, Church Road, Greystones, including two purpose-built classrooms for student with additional needs and four new classrooms for students.

Speaking at the opening, the Tánaiste commended the staff and especially Principal Rachel Harper for the tireless work in getting this across the line.

The expansion is a “significant milestone” in the life of the school and the wider community.

Tánaiste Simon Harris paid tribute to the leadership of Principal Rachel Harper and Chairperson of the Board of Management Canon David Mungavin, as well as to the staff, parents, and students whose commitment has made the development possible.

“At the heart of everything we do is the children of this school,” he stated. “Every decision we make must be about helping each and every child thrive, no matter their background or needs.

“For years I have been working with the school to make sure we delivered these additional and much needed classrooms. Ensuring we meet the needs of the learners is essential if we want every child to reach their full potential when it comes to education.

The Tánaiste also praised the school’s holistic approach to learning, citing its involvement in sports, the arts, the Green Schools Programme, and mental health initiatives like the Amber Flag.

“The challenges facing our children today are evolving, from anxiety to the impacts of social media,” he noted.

“This school, under Principal Harper’s leadership, is not waiting for change, it is driving it.”

The Tánaiste emphasised that supporting children to reach their full potential requires more than just infrastructure. “It’s about investing in people – teachers, SNAs, parents, secretaries, and caretakers – and in the services that wrap around our schools to make them safe, nurturing spaces.”

“I am deeply committed to making sure that all school sin Wicklow get the funding and resources they need and I will not rest until we provide these supports right across the county.

The event was attended by Local Fine Gael Councillor Louise Gaskin Fenelon, parents, students, and members of the school and wider Greystones community.

Afterwards, everyone headed up the town, for the big It Takes A Village shindig at The Whale.
