Just Outside Your Window…

The sky isn’t particularly red, the sun is bursting through the clouds in all its Biblical glory, and the setting is just a small group of trees beside a pathway behind Kindlestown Park, a route that most people simply use to get and from to St. Laurence’s school.

And yet, late in the evening, on a nothing Monday – February 1st 2016, to be precise – after a sunny but windy day, just a few minutes in this small clutter of trees is as good as any walk in any rosette-laden woods on the planet.

Up close, trees are towering, majestic, and oblivious. Oblivious to the joy or anxiety, the madness or serenity or the wealth or the poverty that may rattle on around them. They’ve got more important, and satisfying, business to attend to. The likes of fashion, finance and fascism don’t figure.

As the American poet Joyce Kilmer once wrote…

I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

Which is a fair point, given that trees are beautiful, and poems are for sad sacks. Who can rhyme.

So, take a look out your window. Better still, take a walk around wherever you happen to live in this beautiful town. And let yourself get lost for a few moments.

Unless, of course, you’re very, very old. In which case, best tie a thread from your cardigan to the front door before venturing off. And bring a phone.
