n a move that will undoubtedly send shockwaves through the franchise – if not retail in general – Sports Direct in Greystones are going to have a giant one-day no-sale.

Which will mean that, for one whole day, well, Sports Direct at Meridian Point won’t be in the middle of a sale, won’t be starting a sale, and won’t be winding up a sale.

There will just be no sale.

“We’re thinking outside the discount bin,” says the store’s Meridian manager, Ruth Bróga. “We have a feeling that, every day, people just pass by our shop window on their way to the post office, and they’ve become totally immune to our big banners screaming 70% Off or Huge Reduction…”

“So, we thought to ourselves, let’s mix it up,” says assistant manager Rian Culaith, “and not have any sale at all. With just a plain window.

“That should get people’s attention. Finally…”

It’s the sort of bold thinking that has the likes of Power City, Harvey Norman and Des Kelly Carpets watching the Greystones store closely, keen to see just how their bonkers-verging-on-brilliant idea will play out.

“As with sports itself,” says regional manager Díolachán Neamhrialta, “the curveball can be the move that wins the game. And you don’t get more curveball than Sports Direct having a whole day without a sale…”

Due to happen on Tuesday, June 10th, Bróga has a parting shot.

“Naturally, even though there won’t be any official sale on that day, we will have some special offers in store.

“And a bargain bin. And a few discontinued, discounted ranges, plus 20% off any running shoes with red or orange on them…”
