t was a close call last night for Bray’s boxing legend Katie Taylor as she fought to keep her lightweight titles last night.
The venue was Madison Square Garden, her opponent Puerto Rican pugilist Amanda Serrano.
In front of a sell-out crowd of 19,187, Serrano won the first fight 96-94 on the first judge’s scorecard, the other two judges giving Taylor the edge with 96-93 and 97-93. There were boxing pundits who argued that the latter score was unacceptably wide, and that a draw would have been a much better result.
Those same commentators all seem to agree that it was an exhilarating but brutal battle, with both women left cut and bleeding. It meant that the Irish and Puerto Rican fans in the arena were not disappointed by the intensity on display from both fighters.
Both Taylor and Serrano would have been pretty happy too, given that they each earned over $1m for their night’s work.
Speaking before the match, Taylor expressed her appreciation of her Irish fans (4,000 having flown from Dublin to New York for the fight), and her strong desire to one day step into the arena in her native country.
With this latest win, Taylor retains her WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO lightweight titles.
So, it can only be a matter of time before Katie has a statue down on Bray seafront, right…?
